Frogs and Worms: An Ecocritical Look at

Murakami Haruki’s after the quake

Professor Alex Bates, Dickinson College

March 8th, 2018 || 4:15 – 5:30 PM

Hahn 108

This talk examines conception of nature and disaster in Murakami Haruki’s short story collection known in English as after the quake.Murakami purposefully locates his stories away from the immediate disaster in Kobe, but each deals with natural forces in some way. The presentation centers on the human/nature divide and conception of nature as either a mindless beast wreaking havoc on civilization in “super frog saves Tokyo” or as a creative force in “all god’s children can dance.”
